Parents guide

Medical school is almost as exciting for parents as it is for students. The fact that your child is seriously considering launching their medical education and career at American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine is cause for celebration. Yet we understand that medical school is a major commitment and expense, and recognize that as a parent, the decision to send your son or daughter far from home is not one made lightly.

EXPLORE AUA COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

To put your mind at ease, we’ve put together this overview to answer many of the questions you may have about AUA.

The AUA website provides information about:

Graduate Success

Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, U. Penn, Cornell, the University of California. These are just some of the prestigious institutions an AUA education has taken our alumni. Check out our Graduate Success to see which competitive specialties they practice, and what our residency placements are.

Scholarships

Did you know that AUA offers 17 different, generous scholarships? They include cultural, academic, and service awards. We award some automatically upon acceptance to students who qualify. Visit our Scholarships page to learn which ones may have your son or daughter’s name on them.

Loans

AUA students can apply for US federal loans. Students from Canada can receive Canadian federal and provincial loans and participate in grant programs. Get more information about eligibility and the application process here.

Student and Campus Life

The AUA student communities are one big family. A campus health clinic, student organizations, athletic fields, fitness center, numerous community outreach endeavors, and research opportunities make it easy for students to feel connected, engaged, and secure during their time here. Read about these resources in our Student Life section.

A Great Way for Parents and Students to Learn more About AUA

A campus tour is the perfect way to get acquainted with everything AUA has to offer first and second-year med students. We’ll even reimburse your child’s flight expenses in the form of a $2,000 tuition credit once he or she enrolls.

MD Program Structure

  • US-Modeled Curriculum
  • Basic Sciences in the Caribbean
  • Global Health Track (GHT)* in collaboration with FIU (optional)
  • Clinical Sciences in the U.S., Canada, UK, and India

*There is no fee or tuition for participating in the GHT; as the program is not part of AUA’s medical doctorate program, federal financial aid is not available for the living expenses of students during GHT sessions. Participation in GHT is strictly voluntary.

Here’s one of the most frequently asked questions we receive from parents: is studying at AUA the same as studying at a med school in the United States?

Answer: AUA is located in the Caribbean but we teach a US-modeled curriculum. Discover how small class and lecture sizes and an emphasis on student-centered, interactive learning keep AUA on par with any high-quality MD program in the U.S. Additionally, we should point out that your child’s clinical rotations will take place at one or more of AUA’s affiliated teaching hospitals, which are located throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, the UK, and India if you choose. Our unique collaboration with Florida International University (FIU) enables your son or daughter to begin their medical career in Antigua through the Global Health Track program and complete all their core clinical rotations back to back at FIU-affiliated teaching hospitals in South Florida.

AUA Offers a US-style Medical Education That Just Happens to Take Place in the Caribbean.
