Dr. J. Prakasa Rao’s article examines the history and pharmacology of a forgotten congestive heart failure treatment.

Physiology News, the quarterly magazine of The Physiological Society, published “Death of a Diuretic,” by American University of Antigua (AUA) Professor of Physiology Dr. J. Prakasa Rao. The article appears on page 38 of issue 83 (Summer, 2011).

Members of The Physiological Society turn to Physiology News to keep informed about developments, findings, and historical perspectives in the field of physiology, as well as news directly relating to the organization. The magazine helps maintain dual channels of communication between the Society’s administration and its members and serves as a window into the Society’s activities.

Dr. Rao earned his MBBS from Guntur Medical College at Andhra University in Visakhapatnam, India, and his MD from Christian Medical College at the University of Madras in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He was a Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor of Physiology at Christian Medical College before joining the faculty of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, as a Physiology Professor in 2006. Making the most of the international bond between Manipal and AUA, Dr. Rao assumed the position of Professor of Physiology in Antigua, where he still teaches today.
