Demographic data and other facts and statistics about Antigua and Barbuda.
Living in Antigua
AUA is located on the northern edge of the island of Antigua, the main island in the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda. This nation obtained full independence in 1981, and the government has remained stable and democratic since that time. The official language is English.
The nation is part of the Lesser Antilles chain of islands, which start east of the Greater Antilles (Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba) and extend south to the edge of South America. Antigua and Barbuda are approximately 325 mi (525 km) east of Puerto Rico.
Antigua has a moderate climate, with temperatures averaging between 82°F and 87°F (28°C and 31°C). Rainfall averages 42 in (106 cm) per year, though it varies widely, and is heaviest during the summer. The environment ranges from beaches to lush rainforest.
The AUA campus is located at the northern end of Antigua, four minutes from the airport. With an area 108 sq. mi (160 sq. km), the island is completely accessible by car.
The currency is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar, which is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a rate of 2.68 to 1, though U.S. dollars are readily accepted throughout the island.
