Faculty

Seymour Schwartz is the Provost and Professor of Surgery. He served as the Chair of the University of Rochester School of Medicine Department of Surgery. He has received an appointment as Distinguished Alumni Professor from the University of Rochester, School of Medicine. Dr. Schwartz has published extensively. However, he is probably best known for his text book, Principles of Surgery, which is considered by many as the definitive text book on the practice of surgery, and which is used in almost every United States medical school. In addition, Dr. Schwartz has authored close to a dozen other text books that are used in medical schools across the United States. He has published more than fifty individual chapters of various text books, over 200 articles, and continues to lecture extensively at medical schools throughout the United States and the world.

Dr. Nagra is the Executive Dean of Basic Sciences - Antigua Campus & Vice President for Academic Affairs at AUA. He received his professional qualifications - MBBS, diploma in public health and MD in preventive and social medicine from the Armed Forces Medical College, University of Pune, India. He served the Indian Army and Navy as a specialist in Community Medicine for 28 years. He opted for a premature retirement at the rank of Surgeon Captain. His meritorious services were recognized by the Chief of Naval Staff and he was appointed as Director Health Services of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India for a five-year term. He oversaw the provision of comprehensive healthcare to a population of 350,000 dispersed over 21 islands, in the vast waters of the Bay of Bengal, through a network of 120 health institutions that he helped develop. This contribution was honored by the President of India with the Vishisht Sewa Medal. 

Dr. Nagra joined the Manipal Group in 1995 after taking a premature retirement from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune. He was the foundind Dean and Director of Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Nepal. In a span of 8 years, the college and its associated Manipal Teaching Hospital were recognized as centers of excellence in the region. At the same time, he helped Kathmandu University in establishing the Faculty of Medicine as member of the University Senate, Academic Council and Faculty Board. 

The experience and expertise that Dr. Nagra acquired in healthcare and medical education make him capable of succeeding at both his administrative and academic responsibilities. From Nepal, he moved to Malaysia as Dean, Melaka-Manipal Medical College. He was concurrently appointed Pro Vice Chancellor, Manipal University, India. Thereafter he served as Principal Officer for the Manipal Group's International Campus Operations and Chief Executive, Manipal Health Systems.

A board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Bell received his M.D. degree and his doctorate from the J .W. Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. He spent nine years in the German navy as a medical officer; during that time he was trained as a naval flight surgeon at the U.S. Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida.

Dr. Bell served as deputy medical director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Ostseeklink Damp and completed numerous national and international rescue missions as emergency physician of the German Air Rescue.

Prior to his assignment at American University of Antigua he chaired the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Holberton Hospital, St. John's, Antigua. Dr. Bell served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Executive Dean Antigua Campus for AUA from 2005 through 2009.

Dr. Glasser has taught physiology and neuroscience at Long Island University, the College of New Rochelle, Fordham University, and St. George's University School of Medicine. He was Guest Lecturer in Neuroscience at Peking Union Medical College (Beijing, China) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1987. Dr. Glasser received a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Rochester. As a post-doctoral fellow, he conducted research in the Department of Physiology at Brandeis University and the Neuropsychology Laboratory of Harvard University. He has received two grants from the National Institutes of Health, and Numerous Excellence in Teaching awards. Dr. Glasser is a member of The New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, the Society for Neurosciences, and the International Brain Organization.

Dr. Lueck is a graduate from the University of Bielefeld in Germany, where he obtained both a degree as diplom-biologe (equivalent to master of science degree in Biology) and the doctor of natural sciences degree (DNSc equivalent to PhD). For both degrees, Dr. Lueck majored in molecular biology, molecular cell biology, biochemistry, and genetics. Dr. Lueck has 5 years post-doctoral experience in biomedical research and spent 3 years of his post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He also has more than 20 years experience in teaching and tutoring students at the high school, college and university level.

From 1999 to 2004 Dr. Lueck was chair of the Department of Medical Biochemistry at Saba University School of Medicine. At Saba University he was also Director of Research and later chair of the Molecular Sciences Division. Since 2004, Dr. Lueck is Professor and Chair of the Department for Medical Biochemistry and Genetics at AUA. From March 2005 to December 2007 Dr. Lueck was appointed Associate Dean of Admissions. Presently Dr. Lück is the Dean of Academic Matters and the chair of the Admissions Committee and the Faculty Recruitment and Review Committee.

Dr. Moreno is the Dean of the American International College of Arts and Sciences – Antigua and Professor of Biology. He comes to AICASA from the University of Colorado, Boulder; where he served as Senior Instructor in Biology for the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Farrand Academic Program. The current President of the Caribbean Academy of Science, Dr. Moreno is also the author of many published articles, and the co-author of “The Tangled Bank” (Vols. 1 and 2), an introductory biology textbook.

Dr. Pathan, professionally qualified as a librarian in 1966, has worked as a Medical Librarian for major medical schools and hospitals in the U.S. and abroad since 1972. He was the first recipient of the Eileen Cunningham International Fellowship of the Medical Library Association, Chicago in 1971, while he was working at St. John's Medical College, Bangalore. Dr. Pathan received Bachelors' degrees in Arts; a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from Karnataka University, Dharwad, India, and a Master's degree in Health Sciences Librarianship from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. He received a Doctorate in Library and Information Sciences from Karnataka University, Dharwad, India. He has extensive experience with the establishment of state-of-the-art medical libraries and learning resource centers and their management.

He has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals and has edited numerous multiple-choice USMLE -type questions for Basic Science courses while working at Medical school. Reza Sanii BSc. Med. MSc. PhD. Professor and Chair for the Department of Physiology also serves as The Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Chair of the Curriculum committee. A graduate of the University of Manitoba School of medicine in Winnipeg Manitoba, Dr. Sanii also followed up his post doctoral training in Canada. He garnered much training and teaching experience in the area of Medical Physiology at a few institutions including in the University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne (United Kingdom).

Dr. Sanii is well recognized as a passionate and capable teacher and is the recipient of numerous teaching awards. He served in varying capacities to many government arms and scientific societies in Canada and around the world. Most of his research and publication focused on the mechanical and neurological response of respiratory system to wide spectrum of respiratory disorders and includes the study of neuro-physiological aspects of the control of ventilations in conscious human. He has also studied the effectiveness of exercise in controlling downfall of respiratory system in patients with spinal cord injuries.

Dr. Sanii has published more than 150 original papers, abstracts and non-scientific articles. He is currently working on a project to design a system enabling patients with weak or even paralyzed respiratory muscles to improve their respiratory defense mechanism through coughing. Such a system may be used to study the mechanism and treatment of upper airway disorders associated with sleep apnea. Dr. Sanii joined the department in 2005.

Dr Madeleine Fraser, BMBCh, DGM, Dip Derm, BSc (Hons), was born in the UK and qualified from Oxford University in 1995. She achieved an upper second degree in physiology from Edinburgh university. After working as an intern in north London she came to Antigua. There she worked in the casualty department at Holberton hospital before moving in to general practice. She has been a Faculty member of AUA since September 2005.

Dr. Krishnanand has MBBS and MD degrees and has been in the teaching profession since 1980.  He has been a  Pathology professor since 1982. He joined AUA with his vast teaching and diagnostic experience. He is an ardent team player and has taught undergraduate students and residents in Pathology in Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India, Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, Nepal and was briefly associated with Sikkim-Manipal University in Gangtok, Sikkim. He has assisted 40 doctoral students in their research work and has dozens of publications in National and International Medical Journals. He is known for his unique teaching skills. He won the ‘good teacher’ award in the years 2002 and 2004 while serving Kasturba Medical College.

Dr. Morcos received his MD in 1986 from University of Alexandria and PhD in pharmacology and toxicology in 2005 from Florida A&M University. He carries wide experience in teaching and research from University of Miami, Florida A&M University and Florida State University. Dr. Morcos’s research paper on “the effects of simvastatin (zocor) on the memory of Alzheimer’s disease” had made headlines in the Washington Post as well as several health news sites in the US and around the world.

Dr. Bharati Balachandran taught microbiology at the Kasturba medical college, Mangalore, of the Manipal University since 1992. She also served as a diagnostic microbiologist at the clinical laboratory attached to the medical school hospital. Dr. Bharati received a Ph.D in medical microbiology from the Manipal University. While a faculty at the Kasturba Medical College, she has received two research grants, one from the University Grants Commission and the other from Manipal Foundation for her research on molecular diagnostic techniques in the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. She is a member of the American Society for Microbiology and Indian association of Medical Microbiologists.

Dr. Mallin recieved his MD from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1981, and finished a residency in Family Medicine at the same institution in 1984.  He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Addiction Medicine.  He has over twenty years of experience teaching medical students and residents.  During the past 13 years at the Medical University of South Carolina, he has been heavily involved in curriculum design, administration and evaluation in undergraduate medical education.

Dr. Richard S. Hannah is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada, where he earned a baccalaureate degree in zoology and his masters of science and doctor of philosophy in human anatomy. In addition to being listed in the Canadian Who's Who, he is also Emeritus Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Dr. Hannah's research career includes numerous awards and more than 100 publications in the field of Environmental Toxicology. His research interests are currently centered on the development, production, dissemination and evaluation of health related multimedia programs for use in TeleLearning environments.

Most recently, Dr. Hannah, as the Health Science Editor for MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) was instrumental in the planning and establishment of the peer review process for multimedia learning materials. MERLOT (www.merlot.org) is a consortium of Canadian and U.S. Universities committed to improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning by expanding the quantity and quality of peer reviewed online learning materials. As an educator , in the U.S.A. and Canada, Dr. Hannah has taught all aspects of Human Anatomy in both traditional and non-traditional medical curricula.

Dr. Hannah is also the author of numerous computer-based multimedia learning packages for the medical sciences and lay public. Administratively, Dr. Hannah has served in numerous positions including Director of Gross Anatomy, Assistant Dean (Research) and Head, Department of Anatomy. He has also been an elected executive member of the Canadian Association of Anatomists.

Dr. Alan Hrycyshyn has appointments at both the American University of Antigua (AUA) and the University of Western Ontario (UWO) in London, Ontario, Canada. He is Professor and Co-chair of the Department of Anatomy here at AUA and Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Director of the Master's Program in Clinical Anatomy at UWO. Dr. Hrycyshyn received his Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Western Ontario. He has published over 100 publications in Neuroscince and has been awarded numerous Excellence in Teaching Awards at UWO.

Dr. Kastuk earned his Master’s and PhD degrees in Psychology from York University in Canada, and in 1999 began work as a medical school professor. He also holds a Master’s of Science degree in Hyperbaric Medicine. Dr. Kastuk has been involved in a variety of research areas including research on the influence of sex hormones on brain function, decompression studies, as well as his dissertation area concerning the recovery of cognitive skills in the brain injured. Dr. Kastuk is also a certified professional SCUBA diving instructor, and holds various certifications in the field of first aid and emergency treatment.

Dr. James M. Rice is Chair of Behavioral Science. He received his Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wright State University, his Master’s degree in Psychology from Drake University, and his doctoral degree in rehabilitation from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois. He was an Assistant Professor of Psychology at St. Cloud State University, and at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Dr. Rice is currently also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Indianapolis. Dr. Rice has published fifteen peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters. A licensed Psychologist, his primary research interests include psychosocial aspects and coping with chronic disease and disability.

Dr. Adler earned his MD degree in 1969 at the University of Basel in Switzerland.  He completed his residency at Maimonides Medical Center and Coney Island Hospital, both in Brooklyn.  In addition, he completed a rheumatology fellowship at Yale University.  He is a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology. He is the author of over a dozen publications on topics such as lupus nephritis and stroke rehabilitation.  In addition to his role as Clinical Chair of Internal Medicine at AUA, he is Program Director of Resident Education at Interfaith Hospital in Brooklyn.

Dr. Amiralli has an MBBS from Government Medical College, Srinagar, India and Master of Surgery from J.N Medical College, India. Dr. Amiralli has a distinguished career as a surgeon, researcher and teacher that spans nearly thirty years and three continents. He has worked as Consultant Surgeon for the Red Crescent of Society in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Professor at Department of Surgery and Consultant Surgeon at the University of Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Research Associate in the Department of Emergency Medicine and in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Western Ontario, Canada and Research Consultant in Surgery, Shahid Sadoughi University, Yazd, Iran. He trained in Breast Oncology at the department of Surgery, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Dr. Amiralli published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is a life member of the Association of Fellows of the International Union Against Cancer and vice chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Austral-Asian Journal of Cancer.

Dr. Waheeda Amiralli received her bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBBS) from Aligargh Muslim University, Aligargh, India. She also received her Certificate in Tropical Medicine from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Department of Health and Medical Service in Dubai, UAE and her Certificate in Epidemiology and Public Health Aspects of Diabetes in Cambridge, England. Dr. Amiralli brings with her clinical teaching experience. In the department of Medicine at Muhimbili University College of Heath Sciences she was responsible for training medical students. She has done research on many projects including Diabetes and has been published several times.

Dr. Akella  Chendrasekhar  is the Clinical Chair of Surgery.  He received his medical degree from the University Of Miami School Of Medicine, and completed his residency and internship at Brooklyn Hospital in New York.  Dr. Chendrasekhar  is a member of the American Board of Surgery and is board certified in both critical care and general surgery.  He completed his trauma critical care fellowship at the University of Minnesota and is the Director of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.

Dr. Chobanyan graduated with honors, received an MD degree from Yerevan State Medical University in Armenia, a PhD. from I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, and doctor of medical sciences degree after completing research, which identified hyperandrogenemia in young breast cancer patients under the age of 35. In addition to her research, she has more than 50 publications in the peer-review journals, including The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Carcinogenesis, Evidence-Based Oncology, European Journal of Oncology etc. Her pursuit of excellence is also evident in receiving her Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification in 2008. She also completed clinical fellowship in oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Chobanyan has more than 20 years of practice experience including surgical oncology, medical oncology, diagnostic and internal medicine, as well as providing healthcare in rural and underserved communities. She was Chair of Faculty of Diagnostic Medicine for Board Certification of physicians, Professor of Medicine teaching medical students in European and U.S medical schools. Additionally, she served as Chairperson of State Examinations of physicians of the National Institute of Health, Armenia, and Medical Director and Executive Director of the leading National Diagnostic Medical Center. She is member of American Society of Clinical Oncology and European Society for Medical Oncology. She continues to serve as chief medical advisor to organizations in Europe and the United States.

Dr. Durgaprasad is Medical pharmacologist from Manipal University, Manipal, India. Before joining AUA, he worked as an Associate Professor in KMC International Centre, Manipal, India where he was the Chair of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. His subject interests include cancer chemotherapy and central nervous system disorders. His research interests include oxidative stress, antioxidants, pancreatic disorders and indigenous agents in wound healing. He has published several papers in national journals.

Dr. Alvin Eden is the Clinical Chair of Pediatrics. Dr. Eden received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his internship in medicine at Bellevue and his residency in pediatrics at University Hospital. In addition to having taught pediatrics at NYU School of Medicine and lectured at SUNY-Downstate, he has continued to teach at Weill Medical College of Cornel University for the past twenty years. He has been the Chairman/Director of the Pediatrics Department at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for close to [fifty years]. Dr. Eden is board certified, a former president of two Pediatric Society’s, a former Chair of two Academies of Pediatrics, and has a variety of published works.

Dr. Neville Fernandez is a Physician Microbiologist from Manipal University, Manipal, India. He worked as an Assistant Professor in A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore, India where he taught undergraduate microbiology and was a core team member of the Hospital Infection Control Committee. He also worked in the department of Medical Education where he was the Lead Coordinator of the Faculty Evaluation Program. He is a strong proponent of the use of open source software and is involved in the promotion of the same. He currently teaches Microbiology to semester three students.

Dr. Phillip L. Isenberg is the Clinical Chair of Psychiatry. He received his A.B. from Harvard College in 1951 and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1955. He was a practicing psychiatrist at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts from 1980 to 2003; he was awarded the McLean Hospital Teaching Award given by the Residents and soon thereafter the Phillip L. Isenberg Prize was established by the residents awarded annually to the best teacher. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Dr. Kannavar is an Associate Professor in the Clinical Medicine department at American University of Antigua with an MD degree from Kuvempu University, India. She has 14 years of clinical experience as an OB/GYN consultant and is an innovative and renowned teacher with 10 years of teaching experience at Mysore and Kuvempu Medical Universities, India. She was an active member of Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) and was awarded best Mysore district coordinator based on her performance. Dr. Kannavar has had clinical experience throughout the U.S. in different fields such as hematology/oncology in Indiana, and internal medicine & family practice in New Jersey, where she also served as teaching faculty and clinical research associate in oncology and endocrinology trials. She also compiled extensive research on recurrent pregnancy loss. She is an active member of The Federation of Obstetric Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI), American Congress of Obstetrician and Gynecology (ACOG), Breastfeeding Promotion Networking of India (BPNI), Association of Clinical Research Professionals of United States (ACRP).

A graduate from JJM Medical College, Davangere (presently affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, India); Dr. Ashwin went on to pursue his MD in Anatomy at the prestigious Manipal University. He has a teaching experience of over 9 years. He has authored & co-authored several papers in various national and international journals. He has been a peer reviewer for many anatomy journals. He is the recipient of Certificate of Merit for contribution to medical literature for 3 consecutive years at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. He has worked on the variation in circle of Willis in adult & fetal human brain for his MD thesis.

Dr Nagaraj Mysore is a paediatrician from Kuvempu University, India. He has professional qualifications of MBBS from Bangalore University and Diploma in child health and MD (paediatrics) from Kuvempu University. He was an Associate professor in paediatrics and chief of Neonatology at JSS Medical College in Mysore before moving to United States. He was a post graduate guide for paediatric residents and examiner for Medical students appearing for paediatric clinical exams under Rajiv Gandhi University for 10 years.

His special interest is in Neonatology and has done studies on “Lactation problems in Primi mothers”. His study done on “Breast feeding practices in central rural Karnataka on 1150 infants” got published in Indian academy of paediatrics journal. To pursue his goal in advanced care of paediatrics, he moved to USA and gained 5yrs of US clinical and research experience. He is an active member of Indian academy of paediatrics; BPNI (Breast feeding promotion network of India) and CCMA of New Jersey. He was instrumental getting Baby friendly hospital initiative to JSS Medical school of Karnataka. He was a professor and Unit Chief of pediatrics at Vydehi institute of Medical Sciences and Research centre, Bangalore, India. He is a registered Pediatrician of Antigua and Barbuda.

Dr Mysore is well known Cricketer. He was the captain of the medical school and represented Karnataka state as an all rounder in 1989 along with former Indian cricket players.

Dr. Sanjeev Nischal is the Clinical Chair of Family Practice. He is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He is a member of the Society of Teachers for Family Medicine. He served as an adjunct clinical instructor at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) and as a clinical visiting Associate Professor for an offshore medical school. He is a member of the Infectious Disease and Infection Control Committee and Tumor Board. He is a clinical tutor and an ECFMG advisor for Kaplan Medical Center. He is currently an attending physician at the Department of Preventive and Family Medicine and the Department of Emergency Medicine at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. 

Dr. Pankaj Patel is a Clinical Co-chair of Psychiatry. He received his medical education at Kasturba Medical College. He is a board-certified psychiatrist and has been practicing for over 30 years.

Dr. Rao obtained his MBBS degree from Guntur Medical College at Andhra University in Visakhapatnam, India, and his MD from Christian Medical College at the University of Madras in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He was a Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor of Physiology at Christian Medical College, and he joined the faculty of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal as a Physiology professor in 2006.  He is the author of some 20 papers, including Clinical Physiology in Medical Education in India.

Dr. J. Franklin Richeson is the Director of Clinical Student Affairs. Dr. Richeson received his medical degree from the University of Rochester. He completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, also in Rochester, and in 1979 went on to become an attending physician there, a position he holds to this day. Dr. Richeson teaches Medicine/Cardiology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and was Associate Dean of Advising for 10 years. He is the author of several publications related to cardiac ailments, and is a member the American Heart Association.

Dr. John C. Riggs is the Clinical Chair of OB/GYN. He received his B.S. in Biology from Georgetown University in 1981and earned his M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1985. He is accredited by the American Board of OB/GYN and the Accreditation Council for Gynecologic Endoscopy (ACGE). He served as the President of the Medical Staff Society, Chairman of the Perioperative Committee, Director of the Women’s Health Center, Gynecology and Urogynecology at the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center where he currently serves as the Acting Chairman of the Department of OB/GYN. 

A board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Bell received his M.D. degree and his doctorate from the J .W. Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. He spent nine years in the German navy as a medical officer; during that time he was trained as a naval flight surgeon at the U.S. Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida.

Dr. Bell served as deputy medical director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Ostseeklink Damp and completed numerous national and international rescue missions as emergency physician of the German Air Rescue.

Prior to his assignment at American University of Antigua he chaired the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Holberton Hospital, St. John's, Antigua. Dr. Bell served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Executive Dean Antigua Campus for AUA from 2005 through 2009.

Dr. Deborah Dalmeida earned her bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degree from A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalore, India in 2009. She has also worked as resident medical officer at the Mangalore nursing home where her responsibilities included independent outpatient consultation and attending to inpatient calls and coordinating with visiting consultants. She joined AUA College of Medicine in May 2011 where she currently teaches pathology to the Semester 3 students. Apart from teaching, her other passions include freelance writing, photography, poetry writing, debating and compering.

Dr. De Castro earned her MBBS Degree from Ernesto Che Guevara de la Serna of Pinar del Rio, Faculty of Medicine in 2007. She completed certification by the Caribbean Association of Medical Councils Examinations in 2009.  Dr. De Castro was Associate Professor of Doctor, Patient, Society (DPS) and Intro to Clinical Medicine (ICM) at AUA until 2008, when she became Locum Intern at May Pen Hospital in Clarendon, Jamaica.  Upon completion of her internship, she returned to Antigua, where she obtained a position as Hospital Officer at Mt. St. John’s Medical Center in St. Johns, a position she holds in conjunction with her role as Clinical Adjunct Faculty for AUA.

Dr. Manjunath received his MBBS and MS in General Surgery from Bangalore Medical College.  He went on to taech at the ollege for several years. He is a registered Medical practitioner in Antigua & Barbuda as well as India. He was the Consulting Surgeon for Holberton Hospital, St Johns for several years. He also worked as Surgeon in Montserrat. He conducted his Masters research at Bangalore University on Thyroid diseases in urban and rural areas of Bangalore, and also worked as Assistant Professor in the Anatomy Department at AUA.

Dr. Viswanath earned both his MBBS and MS master of surgery in clinical anatomy from Mysore Medical College, India. He went on to do his Senior Residency in Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER – Pondicherry). Before joining AUA he worked as an Associate professor and Chair for seven years in the Department of Anatomy at Spartan Health Sciences University, St. Lucia. He has been a permanent member of the Anatomical Society of India and a regular member of the American Association of Anatomists.

Dr. Chandra Shekar has been faculty in Physiology and Neurosciences courses for almost 28 years. Before assuming the position of Professor of Physiology and Neurosciences at AUA College of Medicine, he worked as a member of senior faculty at Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal. Based on students’ evaluation of Pre-clinical faculty, he was presented the Good Teacher Award many times. When KMC International Center, was commissioned in Manipal in 2005, he was instrumental in establishing physiology and neurosciences courses, and filled in many other administrative roles like Chairperson of the Curriculum Committee, Chairperson of the Promotion Committee, and Chief Proctor of the NBME exams etc. He had been Chief Proctor at KMC for almost all the examinations for more than 15 years, including the MRCP and MRGDP of European bodies in India. He has presented papers in many scientific conferences and published papers in peer-reviewed journals of national and international repute. He was instrumental in starting Biomedical Engineering programs at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. He has authored 3 books in physiology and neurosciences for graduate programs in Dentistry, Nursing, and Physical Therapy.

Deborah Gerrity, Ph.D, a counseling psychologist, is an Associate Professor in Behavioral Sciences and the University Counselor. Prior to coming to AUA, she taught at at the University at Buffalo, SUNY in Counseling Psychology and Purdue University. Her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Masters Degree in Community Counseling, Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, and doctoral internship were all completed at the University of Maryland at College Park. Her counseling and research interests are in the areas of group counseling and women’s issues, including sexual abuse, sexual harassment, infertility, and gender role socialization. Deborah has authored or co-authored over 20 journal articles, research reports, manuscripts, and book chapters. In 2002 and 2004, she received the Outstanding Research Article on Groups Award from the Association For Specialists In Group Work. She is an Academic Advisor for AUA’s Phi Delta Epsilon Fraternity. She is a co-advisor of the AUA American Medical Student Association and the AUA American Medical Women’s Association and participates in a variety of outreach activities in the Antiguan community.

Dr. Hannah is a senior health information management consultant specializing in information integration in health care environments from strategic planning to implementation of information systems in health care. Dr. Hannah is the author of several textbooks and numerous articles on computers in health care, as well as and health informatics. She is coeditor, with Dr. Marion Ball, of the highly respected Health Informatics Series (formerly Computers in Healthcare) published by Springer-Verlag (http://www.springer-ny.com/healthinformatics).

Dr. Hannah's current projects include initiatives with the Canadian Nurses Association, the Alberta Cancer Board and Canada Health Infoway. Dr. Hannah is currently Head of the Canadian Delegation to the International Health Terminologies Standards Development Organization and a member of the Canada Health Infoway Standards Collaborative Steering committee. She was formerly tenured Professor in the Faculty of Nursing and in Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary where she continues to serve as an Adjunct Professor.

Dr. Mallin received her MD from The Brody School of Medicine in North Carolina, and completed her family medicine residency at Medical University of South Carolina. She comes here from the faculty of MUSC as a board-certified family medicine physician. 

Dr. Merrin earned his  bachelor's of science from King's College, London University and his PhD in medicinal chemistry from  Dalhousie University, Canada. His research interests include bioinformatics and chemometrics. He is a member of the Canadian Society of Biochemistry, Molecular & Cell Biology.

Professor Vincini’s skills and experience include instructional design consultations for the faculty at Tufts University including the medical, dental and nutrition schools in Boston and the Veterinary Sciences School in Grafton, MA.  She recently served as the Assessment Coordinator for the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University and served as the Chair of the Student learning Outcomes Committee, a university-wide committee. 

She has wide-ranging experience in teaching various writing and communication courses, including teaching online, distance learning planning, and faculty development, including the Annual Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning with Technology and Health Sciences’ Mini-Symposiums at Tufts. She has served as the English and Social Sciences Chair at Ivy Tech State College.  Professor Vincini has an Ed.S. from Indiana University in Instructional Systems Technology in the School of Education, an M.A.  in English Education from the University of Evansville, and a B.S. degree from Indiana State University.

She wrote a successful three-year $1.2 million matching grant proposal to design and develop the Virtual Instructional Designer (VID) for a partnership of three colleges.  The VID won the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) Classics Award for Exemplary Learning Materials.

Dr. Pathan, professionally qualified as a librarian in 1966, has worked as a Medical Librarian for major medical schools and hospitals in the U.S. and abroad since 1972. He was the first recipient of the Eileen Cunningham International Fellowship of the Medical Library Association, Chicago in 1971, while he was working at St. John's Medical College, Bangalore. Dr. Pathan received Bachelors' degrees in Arts; a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from Karnataka University, Dharwad, India, and a Master's degree in Health Sciences Librarianship from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. He received a Doctorate in Library and Information Sciences from Karnataka University, Dharwad, India. He has extensive experience with the establishment of state-of-the-art medical libraries and learning resource centers and their management.

He has published several papers in peer-reviewed journals and has edited numerous multiple-choice USMLE -type questions for Basic Science courses while working at Medical school. Dr. Nanidini Rao obtained her PhD in medical biochemistry from Manipal University, India, and completed her post-doctoral studies in the dept. of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Indiana School of Medicine, Indianapolis, on the mechanism of action of PTH on the bone. After working as a visiting research scientist at Indiana School of Medicine, Terre Haute where she studied on the froglet limb regeneration, Rao went on a scientific adventure on salamander limb regeneration at Purdue School of Science, Indianapolis.

Her research experience includes proteomics, genomics, purification of proteins etc. In addition to publications in internationally indexed journals, she is also a co-author for a chapter In “Principles of Regenerative Medicine”, for which Thompson J is one of the editors. Dr. Rao taught medical Biochemistry for about 15 years as a faculty in Manipal and taught molecular biology and cell biology in Terre Haute and Indianapolis, in addition to Medical Biochemistry. She is also a member of Indiana University Center for Regenerative Biology and Medicine.

Dr. Deepthy Nadh earned his PhD in Anatomy from Melaka Manipal Medical College and received his master of science in medical anatomy from Kasturba Medical College, both in India. He has 14 years of experience in Academics and Research and is currently an Associate Professor of Anatomy at AUA College of Medicine. Dr. Reghunadhan has also taught Anatomy at Melaka Manipal Medical College. He is also an accomplished researcher and an elected member of the American Association of Anatomists. In addition, he is the author of 12 peer-reviewed publications in Indian and international journals, and has presented research works all over the world.

Dr. Chakravarthy Marx Sadacharan earned a Bachelor degree in Physiotherapy (BPT) at the Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai in India. He completed his MSc in medical anatomy from Kasturba Medical College and earned his PhD in human peripheral nerve changes with aging from the Manipal University, Manipal, India. Dr. Marx was a Lecturer and Assistant Professor in Anatomy at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, India.

Dr. Marx has special interest in studying the human and animal peripheral nerve changes with respect to the aging. He has 10 international peer reviewed research publications from his Doctoral thesis alone, among which most of them are indexed by the National Library of Medicine, U.S.A. He is a peer reviewer of Clinical Anatomy and Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy Journals. He has presented his research papers at international conferences held at India and Singapore.

Dr. Shetty completed his postgratuate studies in medical biochemistry and earned his Ph.D in wound healing from the prestigious Manipal University in India. Before assuming the Associate Propessor of Biochemistry and Genetics at AUA College of Medicine, he has taught Medical Biochemistry for M.B.B.S and Allied Health Science students of Manipal University for last 15 years. He worked in AIMST Medical University, Malaysia for about 2 years. Dr. Shetty is involved in research activities and he has more than 10 publications in Internationally indexed Journals and he presented his work in National and International conferences.

Dr. Bolanthur Shivaraj received his MSc and PhD at Kasturba Medical College (KMC) in Manipal, India, from the Universities of Mysore and Kerala respectively. He has over 34 years of overall teaching experience and 21 years as a professor. He has taught at the University of St. Eustatius School of Medicine in the Netherlands, the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences in India, and most recently, he was a professor at KMC where he taught for over 31 years. His fields of research include enzymes and enzyme inhibitors, urinary lipid profiles in nephritic syndrome and protein-protein interaction. He has published a dozen research publications.

Dr. Dyal N. P. Singh is the Professor of Histology and Cell Biology at the American University of Antigua. Dr. Singh has over 35 years of experience teaching Anatomy, Histology and Cell Biology, and Neuroscience at several universities including: University of Manitoba and University of Alberta, Canada where he taught for 28 years. He also held positions as Professor at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad, and Ross University in Dominica and presently at the American University of Antigua. Dr. Singh has been granted over 30 awards for excellence in teaching from all the institutions where he has taught. Dr. D. N Singh conducted research in Cell Biology and worked in a Biochemistry and Cell Biology Laboratory from 1985-2002. He is co-author of several publications of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. He has published  “Atlas of the Human Brain and Spinal Cord” in England, and ocunts over 60 publications in various research fields.

Regina Clark brings over 20 years of academic experience to EED, including numerous teaching positions in colleges throughout Tennessee and Kentucky.  She is also an accomplished author, playwright, and public speaker.   She earned her BS in Broadcasting and her MS in journalism & communications from the University of Tennessee, and her EdD from Tennessee State University.  Ms. Clark teaches several classes in the EED that focus on time management, leadership skills development, and the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Students.  She also assists other departments with exam procoting counseld students.  

Professor Carla Cummings graduated with a Master of Arts in Counseling and Educational Psychology with a focus on College Student Personnel from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. While pursuing her degree she worked in the Center for Student Leadership, and conducted research on the effectiveness of a study skills course. Professor Cummings has also served students as an Academic Advisor at both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and for the past 4 years at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. In her role as an Academic Advisor Professor Cummings met with students on an individual basis each semester to assist the students in assessing their academic progress, and support the students in reaching their educational goals. Additionally she has taught Learning Strategies, Freshman Programs, and Race Relations courses. Professor Cummings has presented nationally on race relations in higher education, and served as the Program Director for a non-profit organization focused on improving communication between races in Pittsburgh. Professor Cummings’s passion lies in being an advocate for students, and creating a positive community for students as they pursue their dreams.

Dr. Roslyn Trezevant Haley earned a doctorate in education (Ed.D) with a specialization in educational Leadership from the University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA).  She has a masters degree in public administration (MPA) from California State University Los Angeles (CSULA) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in History from South Carolina State University (SCSU). Her most recent professional experience was Dean of Counseling and Matriculation at Antelope Valley College (AVC) through June 2011. Before her tenure at AVC, she was the Executive Director of Student Administration at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science. Dr. Haley worked at UCLA for twenty five years in student services administration and counseling. While there, she was academic counselor for students in the School of Public Health which included the MD/MPH joint degree program.   She is also on the faculty at the University of Phoenix and is a Chair in the College of Humanities.

Dr. Haley appears in Marquis' Who's Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, and Who's Who in Education.  She is also listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers. In 2007, she represented the United States on issues of equity for women in education as a Citizen Ambassador to Egypt .  In 2010, she was also selected to serve as a delegate to Cuba to research issues of gender equity and access in healthcare and education.

Although her list of accomplishments and accolades is extensive, recent highlights include the following. She was selected as a Presidential Inaugural Candidate for the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. She served as Vice-President of the California Association of Community College Matriculation Officers, 2010-2011, Co-Chair of the Antelope Valley Higher Education Consortium (2010-2011), and was an adviser and presenter for the BEST in Education Collaborative for Los Angeles County (2010). Dr. Haley was a presenter at the 2011 Educating for Career Conference, 2010 WASC Academic Research Conference, and 2009 California Diversity and Leadership Conference. Her work in education was featured in an article published by the California Association of Financial Aid Administrators, 2008. Dr. Haley is also a published author and was a past recipient of the Editor’s Choice Award from the National Library of Poetry.

Ms. Mulrain was born in Jamaica and has 37 years post qualification experience in Nursing, the last 12 of which have been at teaching positions at University of the West Indies as well as the School of Nursing (SON), where she is an Associate Professor. She has worked extensively as a Nurse and Midwife and earned her master's in public health from University of the West Indies. She is dedicated to bettering the lives of infants and children through research in the fields of maternity care, child and adolescent morbidity and mortality, the public health aspect of premature birth, and especially the impact of the nursing shortage on care delivery.

In 2009, Dr. James completed the Ph.D. program in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University. Her research focused on elucidating molecular mechanisms of nutrient uptake in Escherichia coli.

Dr. James has held a number of teaching assistantships both at Dalhousie and McGill universities and has mentored a number of undergraduate and graduate students at McGill University. She was the 2009 International Student of the Year, awarded by the Canadian Bureau for International Education based in Ottawa, Canada.
