The Time of My Life
I am packing away my winter wardrobe. In February, twenty-two inches of snow blanketed Chicago, bringing the city to its knees. As I trudged through the sludgy mess, I thought, “When will this end?” This is a question I have asked myself many times as I read through a chapter that seems to grow in the length as I turn each paper. It is a question I have asked as I plowed through a timed, practice question set with never-ending patient case. A more real reminder of the time is when nurses, technicians, and residents stop me and say, “Aren’t you almost done?”
It’s beyond amazing how quickly time flies on rotations. One day you are introducing yourself to your new attending and the next day you are shaking his or her hand, thanking them for the knowledge they gave you. When you first make your clinical rotation schedule and your next rotation doesn’t begin for eight weeks, something in your mind says, “I’ve got lots of time!” Nothing could be further from the truth. Somehow, the clinic hours and rounds become one giant blur. My medical school journey has taken me from the Caribbean, to Miami, to Chicago, and who knows where else? There have been a number of days when I am speaking to my father and I question, “What is today?” Aside from the massive debt and even greater stress, perhaps this is the time of my life!
