On interview day:

  1. Be early! Programs understand issues that can cause a person to be late, but they will still remember that you were late.
  2. Dress professionally! Black suits are popular. Do not be afraid to choose a well-fitted gray, navy solid or pin-striped suit. People will notice.
  3. Wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared for long days (i.e. ladies should have a pair of flat shoes packed).
  4. Try to eat breakfast before you go. You never know what kind of “refreshments” will be provided by the program.
  5. Don’t play with your cell phone! You’re probably just trying to respond quickly to an interview invitation but to an outsider it looks like you’re bored. If you must check your mail, use the bathroom break.
  6. Keep smiling! Whether you’re hungry, tired or bored, everyone is looking at you to see if you’re personable. So turn that frown upside down!
  7. Sell yourself! You were invited for a reason, so be confident in your accomplishments.
  8. Be prepared! Research your interviewers beforehand and review your C.V.
  9. Not many places ask medical questions but do not let them catch you off guard – take a minute to think about your answer, and if you don’t know, be honest.
  10. Ask appropriate questions and participate, but do not become overbearing.

  1. Write prompt thank-you notes to your interviewers AND coordinator for taking their time to include you in their interview process. Include something specific about your interactions to make it more personalized. Emails are universally more efficient and simpler. However, sending a nice card to places you really like may be a nice gesture too.
