On September 8th, the first Research Day of the Fall 2015 semester was held on AUA’s campus. Research Day was originally launched in 2005 by Dr. Olusegun Dipeolu to showcase research by Preclinical Sciences and clinical students. In the last few years, the event has included research presentations by renowned international speakers as well.

This Research Day began with brief remarks from Dr. Robert Mallin, Executive Dean, and by His Excellency Sir Rodney L. Williams, Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda. The keynote speaker for this event was Dr. Larry Fliegel from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Alberta School of Medicine and Dentistry. His presentation was entitled, “Molecular Characterization of Defects in the Na+/H+ Exchanger in Human Disease.” It was preceded by AUA keynote speaker Dr. Chitra Pai, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, who spoke on her research experience with multi-drug-resistant bacteria, their role in nosocomial infections, and the use of alternate anti-microbial agents. Faculty and students had an opportunity to meet and interact with the keynote speakers immediately following the presentations.

AUA’s next Research Day will be on November 17, 2015.
