The Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda received protective life vests from American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine. The donation of eight over-the-top style vests was made yesterday by AUA’s Vice President of Academic Affairs & Executive Dean Dr. Peter Bell to Acting Commissioner of Police Thomas Bennett.

According to Dr. Bell, AUA was prompted to make the donation to help bolster safety and to forge closer cooperation with the police force. He said the University wanted to explore opportunities, not only in providing academic support such as EMS (emergency medical support) education but to assist, where possible, in addressing immediate needs of the Force. Having discussed several options, a decision was made to purchase the vests following specifications provided by the Force.

Bennett explained that the vests provide an instrument of security for members of the Force while on patrol.

“If they come across a vehicle or an incident which could potentially be life-threatening, it’s one tool that they have in their toolbox in order to ensure that they are able to do their job effectively.”

Bennett further thanked AUA for their support and contribution adding that efforts are ongoing to establish closer links with the wider community to provide a safe and secure environment.
