The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, along with over 400 of his fellow citizens, received medical consultation and treatment at the annual American University of Antigua (AUA) Health Fair 2011. The Honourable Winston Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, underwent a checkup during the recent Fair, held at the Multipurpose Centre in Perry Bay.

Sponsored by the AUA chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the Health Fairs have occurred every year since 2006. By creating an open venue for the people of Antigua to receive treatment, the events serve as a key forum in which AUA students can engage in public service. AMSA recruited medically licensed faculty and other volunteers to work alongside AUA medical students, offering free screenings, medical testing, and disease prevention education to the local community.

As a follow-up to the event, AUA issued the following statement of gratitude:

American University of Antigua would like to thank all attendees of the Health Fair. The public turned out in large numbers, and the Fair would not be possible were it not for their enthusiasm. A special “thank you” is also extended to the participating groups, who made this event a success.

We look forward to welcoming all attendees and participants to the next Health Fair and to continuing our health education program.
