![]() ![]() ![]() | Peter Bell, MD Vice President of Global Medical Education and Executive Dean of Clinical Sciences Dr. Peter Bell is the Vice President for Global Education and Executive Dean of Clinical Sciences. A board-certified Anesthesiologist, Dr. Bell received his medical degree and doctorate from J.W. Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. Subsequently, he trained as a naval flight surgeon at the US Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida. Dr. Bell served as Assistant Medical Director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Ostseeklinik Damp, Germany and completed numerous national and international rescue missions as an emergency physician with German Air Rescue. Prior to joining AUA, he chaired the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Holberton Hospital in St. John’s, Antigua. He served as Medical Director of the Caribbean Helicopter Air Ambulance service and as a maritime medicine consultant. At AUA, Dr. Bell served as vice president for Academic Affairs and Executive Dean at the Antigua campus from 2005–2009. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Mark Adler, MD – Internal Medicine co-chair Mark Adler, MD has served as co-chair for the Department of Internal Medicine at AUA since 2011. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Basel Switzerland, where his family resided for many years. He is a Diplomate of the Swiss Institute of Tropical Medicine. After an internship and residency at Maimonides Medical Center and Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, he went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in rheumatology at Yale University Medical School. Dr. Adler has served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale University Medical Center, SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, UMDNJ/NJMS in New Jersey and, most recently as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. Currently, Dr. Adler serves as program director for the internal medicine residency program at Interfaith Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY, where he is also interim chairman and the designated institutional official for Graduate Medical Education, He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including The Young Investigators Award at Yale University, a New York State Certificate of Recognition, New York State Assembly Citation Award, and the Best Teaching Attending Award for several consecutive years at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. He has authored articles in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Journal of Chronic Diseases, and numerous other publications. Dr. Adler is a Founding Fellow of the American Rheumatism Association, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine. |

He is began serving as a program director in 2006. He has been published in 25 publications and gave 20 grand rounds presentations. He was a Tumor Board Moderator, Morbidity, and Mortality Moderator. He was a President of Staff from 2008-2010. He is a member of MEC, GMEC, and the ACS Cancer Committee. He is a part of the following medical societies: ACS, SAGES, APDS, and OSMA. He has received honors from Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and ABS Certifying Examiner. Currently, he is the co-chairman of the AUA Surgery Department 2011- present. |

A practicing pediatrician for over 40 years, Dr. Eden has authored eight books geared toward childcare, childhood obesity, and parenting, as well as more than 35 scholarly articles. In addition, Dr. Eden has been involved in a number of major research investigations, especially in the area of toddler iron deficiency and the adverse effects on cognition. Dr. Eden has taught at numerous medical schools in the United States, and—in his previous role as Chairman of Pediatrics at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Brooklyn—taught and mentored hundreds of pediatrics residents. ![]() ![]() ![]() | Pankaj Patel – Psychiatry Dr. Pankaj Patel grew up in Kenya and attended Kasturba Medical College at Mangalore, India and graduated in February, 1980. He trained in Psychiatry at New York Medical College (Richmond) Program at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Staten Island, NY from 1981-84 and was the Chief Resident in Psychiatry in his final year of training. He joined St. Vincent’s Medical Center as an Attending Psychiatry following his residency. He was the Associate Chair and Director of the Residency Training in Psychiatry at Richmond University Medical center formally St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center of New York, Staten Island Region from November 2002 to April 2008. He was also Acting Chairman and Director Training in Psychiatry from April 2008 to October 2008. He was the Clerkship Director for Psychiatry for New York Medical College at Richmond University Medical Center from November 2002 to January 2008. He was appointed Chairman of Psychiatry at Richmond University Medical Center October 2008. He has been Co-Chair of Psychiatry at AUA School of Medicine from May 2010 to present. He has been Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College from August 1995 to present. In May 2008, Dr. Patel was awarded the Nancy A. Roeske Teaching Award by the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Patel has been involved in various committees at Richmond University Medical Center and has been Chair of the Credentials Committee at Richmond University Medical Center from July 2008 to present. |
![]() ![]() ![]() | Daniel Castellanos – Psychiatry Dr Daniel Castellanos has spent his career in academic medicine dedicated to the education and training of students, residents, and fellows in Psychiatry. He has received several awards for outstanding teaching and has served as a mentor for numerous practicing child and adolescent psychiatrists. Dr Castellanos’ areas of expertise is the appropriate use of psychotropic medications in children and adolescents. He has given over 80 international, national or regional presentations and published two books and an online training module on the appropriate use of psychotropic medications in children and adolescents. Over the past 10 years he has helped organize, moderate and update the State of Florida Best Practice Psychotropic Medication Guidelines. Dr Castellanos has extensive leadership and administrative experience. He has held several medical school leadership positions. Dr Castellanos is Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and Founding Chair of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health at the Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Since 2015, he has also served as the College of Medicine’s Assistant Dean for Graduate Medicate Education. He is also the Associate Program Director for the Citrus Health Network-FIU Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program. As the co-chair for the Department of Psychiatry at AUA, Dr Castellanos will help oversee the education and training at Non-FIU locations. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Cecelia Downs, MA Cecelia Downs earned her undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis and her master’s from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Professor Downs served for nineteen years as an academic skills specialist for health professional students at the University of Illinois in Chicago. She assisted UIC medical students at all levels of their education – from the first year of medical school through residency. Professor Downs has worked with AUA students in Antigua, and she now assists AUA clinical students in the U.S. Throughout her career, her primary focus has been on developing programs to ensure student success, especially on standardized exams. |

Previously, Professor Gethers served as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Medical Scholars Program in the Basic Sciences Education Enhancement Department in Antigua. Her professional experiences include teaching, academic advising, academic support services, study skills instruction, nonprofit leadership, and business administration. Professor Gethers earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education from Old Dominion University. Currently, she is a doctoral candidate for an EdD in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership at the College of William and Mary. |
![]() ![]() ![]() | Dr. Nelda Ephraim Ph.D. Dr. Nelda Ephraim earned her Ph.D. in Education with Distinction from Capella University with a specialization in Nursing Education. She was also inducted into the Honor Society for Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International during her masters’ preparation at Thomas Edison State University. Dr. Ephraim has over 24 years of clinical nursing experience. She is also a nationally certified critical care nurse, a certification she has proudly maintained current since 2008. Dr. Ephraim has worked in academia since 2011, teaching and advising nursing students. She began working with medical students in June 2015 when she joined AUA’s Basic Sciences EED. After some time away from AUA, Dr. Ephraim returned and joined the Clinical Education Enhancement Faculty. During her tenure in Basic Sciences EED, she earned her certification as an Appreciative Advisor, of which she also proudly maintains current. The Appreciative Advising model promotes the use of a student’s strengths to enhance areas of weakness, with encouragement to take the lead in their academic lives. It is Dr. Ephraim’s belief that with the right guidance and motivation, all students can achieve their academic dreams and goals. |
