American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine was front and center in a month-long course for primary school teachers that provided training in Classroom Management Techniques and was sponsored by Antigua’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

AUA Associate Professor Dr. Joy McGhee instructed 20 general and special education teachers on a wide range of topics related to encouraging positive behaviors and eliminating negative ones in the classroom. Participating teachers learned about Differentiated Instruction, Collaborating with Parents, Accommodations in the Classroom, Curriculum Modification, and Behavior Modification for Students with Special Needs. Each teacher was assigned the task of creating an intervention plan for changing undesirable behavior and received a classroom management guide.

AUA’s Dr. Deborah Russ, Assistant Professor in the Education Department (ED) and Ms. Sumita Balooja, AUA’s Public Relations Coordinator were also instrumental in coordinating the program. Participating schools received $1,000 in related supplies, from AUA.

By partnering with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology on this project, AUA is deepening its commitment to being an integral part of Antigua’s community. AUA looks forward to future initiatives like this one.
