Speaking Invitation to Hospital Administrators

Attention Hospital Administrators,

The American University of Antigua College of Medicine is a vibrant, growing school in the Caribbean that provides an education equivalent to the finest U.S. medical schools. Our students complete their basic science studies on Antigua and then return to the United States for their clinical rotations. AUA also has a Program with Kasturba Medical College International Center in Manipal, India, which was recently ranked #1 by the Times of India. Our educational format takes place in modern facilities, utilizes e-learning platforms, and exposes many of our students to simulators to enhance their clinical expertise.

On April 27, 2009, AUA proudly announced its affiliation with the recently opened Mount St. John Medical Center (MSJMC) in Antigua. MSJMC, a $100 million U.S. dollar development, is the Caribbean’s most modern medical facility and gives AUA medical and nursing students access to the highest quality hospital equipment and patient care amenities in the Caribbean.

Under the auspices of the Mayo Clinic Medical Transport’s Gold Cross Training Center, AUA has been named as an international training site by the American Heart Association (AHA). AUA is the first medical school in the Caribbean to have a formal program accredited by the American Heart Association. In early 2008, AUA was recognized by the AHA as an independent International Training Center (ITC) and has subsequently started the Emergency Medicine Training Center (EMTC), an organization dedicated to the teaching of Emergency Medicine in the Caribbean region with a focus on Antigua and Barbuda.

One of our 2009 graduates won first prize for his poster presentation on “Efficacy of Carotid Stents with Risk Factor Modification…” at the Multidisciplinary European Endovascular Therapies annual conference in Cannes, France, in 2008. Last year alone we had several students who scored 99% on Step 1 of the USMLE, which placed them in an elite group among all medical students in the United States.

On April 5, 2009, five AUA students were selected to participate in the Sixth Annual Medical Students Steps to Success Meeting at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. This prestigious event is a meeting sponsored by The American College of Physicians (ACP). Students from George Washington University, Howard University, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Maryland also participated this year. Students who competed in the abstract poster competition followed up with panel discussions on topics that included, the “Path to Internal Medicine and the Impact of a New Administration,” “Medical Student Financial Planning,” and “Overseas Opportunities for Medical Students.” The AUA participants are current Clinical Science students rotating at Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

From May 5–17 , AUA students and faculty teamed up with United States Naval Ship Comfort to provide Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training to the Antiguan medical staff of the newly opened Mount Saint John Medical Centre. In addition, AUA provided training mannequins and the use of their newly constructed training rooms at AUA’s West Campus (the new campus is scheduled for completion at the end of 2009) for the training session.

This is an exciting time for AUA students who have attained some of the most competitive residencies in some of the most prestigious hospitals in the world like the Family Medicine residency at the University of Toronto, SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, and the General Surgery rotation at Mount Sinai in New York. Our students fill the ever-growing void left by retiring family medicine and other primary care physicians, but they also do their residencies at institutions that are designed to help them adapt to the changing landscape of healthcare, consequently enabling those students to provide the best possible care for their patients.

Our clinical faculty is always working on designing future medical outreach programs of interest to students and the local physician community to ensure that AUA addresses the healthcare needs of America and the global society. It would be our pleasure to have you join us at one of these future presentations and/or provide speakers from your organization for our future events.
