A graduate of the University of Manitoba School of medicine in Winnipeg Manitoba, Dr. Sanii also followed up his post doctoral training in Canada. He garnered much training and teaching experience in the area of Medical Physiology at a few institutions including in the University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne (United Kingdom). Dr. Sanii is well recognized as a passionate and capable teacher and is the recipient of numerous teaching awards.
He served in varying capacities to many government arms and scientific societies in Canada and around the world.
Most of his research and publication focused on the mechanical and neurological response of respiratory system to wide spectrum of respiratory disorders and includes the study of neuro-physiological aspects of the control of ventilations in conscious human. He has also studied the effectiveness of exercise in controlling downfall of respiratory system in patients with spinal cord injuries. Dr. Sanii has published more than 150 original papers, abstracts and non-scientific articles. He is currently working on a project to design a system enabling patients with weak or even paralyzed respiratory muscles to improve their respiratory defense mechanism through coughing. Such a system may be used to study the mechanism and treatment of upper airway disorders associated with sleep apnea.
Dr. Sanii joined the department in 2005.
