Mission Statement
American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine is dedicated to providing a learner-centric medical education that meets the highest standards of academic excellence. The university is committed to providing students with the educational resources that will empower them to become compassionate physicians, life-long learners and leaders in addressing the global shortage of healthcare providers.
AUA College of Medicine is committed to meeting the healthcare needs of diverse communities in the United States and globally. The university believes that in order to create an environment of academic excellence, it must ensure a diverse student population that incorporates the skills, knowledge and varied cultural experiences of all peoples. The university is committed to breaking down barriers that have prevented underrepresented minorities from obtaining a medical education and subsequent medical licensure.
History
2004
- AUA College of Medicine is founded with an inaugural class of nine students
2005
- The Center for Tropical Diseases, established within the university to research and fight infectious diseases in developing countries, receives a grant from the British High Commission.
2006
- AUA becomes one of a handful of international medical schools to receive New York State Education Department approval for clinical clerkships and residency trainings in that state.
- The first White Coat Ceremony graduates 65 students from the Basic Sciences program on Antigua.
2007
- Ground is broken for the new campus, conceived and designed to serve students' needs.
- The Mayo Clinic teams with the AUA College of Medicine to establish the first Emergency Medical Training Center in the Caribbean.
- The Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of Antigua, the Honourable Baldwin Spencer, and AUA President Neal Simon meet in New Delhi. Prime Minister Singh voices his support of AUA, Kasturba Medical College and global medical education.
2008
- Manipal University and AUA consolidate their unique relationship, ensuring that Kasturba Medical College—International Center and AUA will provide opportunities in global medical education and research.
- Students hold the first FreedomFest (formerly known as Taster’s Day) at AUA, celebrating diversity in medical education and raising thousands of dollars for local charities.
- AUA and The Rotary Club of Antigua, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Alexandria, VA, conduct the Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Project in Antigua.
2009
- Mount St. John’s Medical Centre and AUA form an affiliation, giving students immersive hospital experience from day one.
- The U.S. Naval Ship Comfort arrives in Antigua and teams up with AUA faculty and students to provide training and care as part its four-month humanitarian and civic assistance mission in the Caribbean.
2010
- AUA College of Medicine adopts the two academic year calendar, mirroring the U.S. medical school paradigm, beginning in August.
July 29, 2011
- AUA College of Medicine is recognized by the Medical Board of California.
