For the fourth consecutive year, American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine has partnered with the Wadadli Triathlon Club to present the 4th AUA Tinman Rohr Triathlon.

Last week, AUA Chief Operating Officer Dick Woodward met with Andre Simon, its co-founding member, to personally deliver the university’s sponsorship contribution.

The Tinman Rohr Triathlon is held annually in honour of the late Jonathan Rohr, an AUA student who co-founded the non-profit event in 2011 as a physical fitness initiative designed to energize and unify the local community as well as educate the public on healthy lifestyles. Sadly, Rohr was diagnosed with a rare heart disease known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and passed away before the inaugural edition took place, but his legacy is carried on by the Wadadli Triathlon Club. Limited proceeds are used to support Antigua & Barbuda’s representation at regional sporting events.

The triathlon regularly attracts an average of 200 local and international competitors. Past competitors include USA professional Jaclyn Fahey, former youth world champion Benjamin Sanson, renowned French triathlete Stephane Poulat, Hungarian Greta Horvath, and Argentinian Claudio Delpueche. From across the region, the event has attracted the likes of 12-time Guadeloupe national champion Olivier Noglotte, 6-time Trinidad & Tobago national champion Ancil Greene, Cuban national champion Vincente Sanabria, and 4-time OECS champion Reginald “Reggie” Douglas from St. Kitts & Nevis.

Tinman Rohr will feature multiple races at varying endurance levels to accommodate a range of participants from top-ranking athletes to fitness enthusiasts, corporate teams, families, and local supporters. The following events will take place and can be completed individually or as a team:

  • Half-Iron Triathlon: 2 kilometer swim, 90 kilometer bike ride, and 21 kilometer run
    • Sprint-Distance Triathlon: 1 kilometer swim, 18 kilometer bike ride, and 5 kilometer run
    • Mini-Distance Triathlon: 500 meter swim, 10 kilometer bike ride, and 2 kilometer run
    • 5K walk/run
    • Races for age groups: 6 & under, 7–10, 11–14, and 15–18

The AUA Tinman Rohr Triathlon will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the scenic Morris Bay Beach.
